Ravi Varma's Enduring Legacy: Transforming Indian Art, Illustration, and Visual Culture
Abstract-This paper delves into the life and work of Ravi Varma (1848–1906), an Indian Painter,
Royal Court Artist, & Printmaker celebrated for introducing European academic art of realism in
his life-like depictions of Hindu deities and mythological narratives. Varma’s other important
contribution was the establishment of a printing press that mass-produced oleographs (prints
designed to look like oil paintings), match-box and textile labels, postcards, and advertisements.
This innovation took Varma’s paintings from the stronghold of royalty and upper-caste elite into
the homes of millions. With this democratisation of art, Varma enabled ordinary people to own
and appreciate art like never before.
This paper talks about Varma's transformative impact on Indian art, focusing on his techniques
and the lasting influence of religious storytelling on contemporary & comic artists across
different cultural spheres in India. His legacy continues to shape artists today because of his
contributions. [1]
